Elon APT program offers licensure for lateral entry teachers

Classroom teachers who need to earn their ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ license will be able to complete the necessary coursework in two years or less with ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ’s Alternative Pathways to Teaching (APT) program. The program offers certification in three areas: elementary education, secondary education and special education.

The Elon APT program is specifically designed for lateral entry teachers who are already ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ in a classroom setting, but lack the specific training required for a North Carolina ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ license. APT offers evening courses during the traditional school year, augmented by a summer schedule of classes. Classroom instruction focuses on behavior management, instructional planning and courses specific to the individual’s ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ field. ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ also have a chance to apply what they have learned, working on field-based assignments under the supervision of teacher education faculty members.

In addition to preparing students for the licensure examination, the APT program’s variety of ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ and graduate level courses allows students to get a head start on a master’s degree.

Interested students should contact the teacher education department at the ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ School of Education at (336) 278-5900 for more information.
